While the Latin American tourism industry as a whole has bounced back mightily in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a couple of spots truly stood out across the Instagram and Facebook feeds of influencers, bloggers, and long-lost family members. These travel destinations certainly went viral over the past year—and both for good reason. They also just so happen to also act as home to two of GCG Group’s most popular offices.

Antigua, Guatemala

Located to the south and west of Guatemala City, Antigua is a small town surrounded by flora, fauna, and volcanoes. As the Spanish colonial capital up until a devastating earthquake rocked the city in 1773, the cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of its buildings still speak to Antigua’s long and colorful history.

In 2022, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism estimated that more than 500,000 people visited Antigua; and when one considers Guatemala’s relative proximity to the United States, its popularity makes sense. An easy flight from many of the larger hubs throughout the states, La Aurora International Guatemala Airport is only about 45 minutes away from Antigua. For many, the trip can be condensed into a single weekend!

El Salvador

Over the course of 2022, El Salvador revamped its tourist board. The results spoke for themselves; the Central American country—once an afterthought, or worse, completely ignored—established itself as a desirable destination. Though small in terms of area, El Salvador is packed with options for adventure-seekers. Like Guatemala, there are more than a couple of volcanoes lurking amid the landscape, as well as hundreds of rivers, acres of lush jungle, and miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean.

However, perhaps what attracted some visitors beyond even its natural beauty, might have been accessibility. El Salvador was the first country to lift ALL COVID-19 restrictions, effectively throwing its doors open to any and all visitors from across the world. It also was the first of its peers to accept Bitcoin as legal currency.
